Draco's hands were shoved deep into his pockets, clutching his wand tightly, a death grip almost. With the sudden turn of events, owing to the last summer, he had become...not paranoid, but a little more protective for himself. It scared him to know that he was on his own. Not even Crabbe and Goyle were there for him now...and Pansy? He didn't care about Pansy...the sniveling git...
He sat down quetly on a rock near the lake, knees pulled up to his chest, arms wrapped around them, one hand still clutching his wand. His blue grey eyes scanned the still waters, knowing there were monsters in there; knowing he would rather face them than...than...Lord Voldemort.
A sigh escaped from his lips, heavy and prolonged. Why him? What had he done? He was born into a family where he had no say in his future. After the sixth year....after what Dumbledore had said.... What if he was right... What if I could be saved...

Sometimes the world can seem to be a good and safe place, full of kind and loyal people. But the truth is that the world is not a safe place, not at all. The world ,which we live in, is full of selfishness, envy, evilness and pride. Humans are born to be mean and self-centered. That is what Hermione Granger thought when she was walking nearby the Black Lake, wearing her gryffindor robe and warm scarf.
Hermione Granger has gone through a lot, even though she was only 18 years old. She has helped her friend to find the philosopher's stone and she has helped Sirius Black to escape from Hogwarts. But there are still only 3 things, which really have mattered : her best friends, her dear Ron and the war against the death eaters. The last one has caused a lot of trouble to many witches, wizards, house elves and even muggles, but Hermione Granger has experienced a lot more than most of them. She has been called 'mudblood' and she has been abused. But the most horrible thing has been that all the time her friends and family have been in danger.
The wind was blowing calmly and the sun was shining, but the light could not reach Hermione's face because she was looking at the ground, walking towards the lake. She didn't usually take strolls alone nowadays since it was not safe, but today was different. Hermione had run out of the castle because she had felt like she was a jailbird. She needed her freedom even though it might cost her life.
Hermione sat down on the grass, leaning on a big tree by the lake. She hid her face behind her hands and finally, she let the tears come. She had held them back for so long that it had almost made her to forget about her sorrow. The sorrow which would only fade away if the war ended.

Draco's lips parted in the infamous synnical grin. Although mocking, it was one of the few things anyone could compliment him on. He had a good smile. His laugh was nice, but only when it wasn't at someone. No, of all his features, the smile he gained from his mother was the best. He scanned the waters again, seeing no sign of life. Much like my home, he thought bitterly, creases in his brow replacing the short lived smile.
The grounds, too, seemed...lifeless. Never had Draco seen so many people avoiding it, for fear of their lives. Rightfully so, of course, but... For the first time since he had come to Hogwarts he felt lonely. Over the summers, over all the summers, loneliness was something he was used to. His father was always away, his mother holed herself up in her room for hours. He had no brothers... His only companions were the house elves and the horses in the stable behind the manor. Of course he liked the horses, but honestly, one can't talk to them... It wasn't like he had any real friends.
The sound of a sigh somewhere close pulled Draco from his thoughts of self pity. He turned his head to look over his shoulder. A girl sat under a tree, face held in the palms of her hands. Her shoulders shook as if she was crying. Her hair...wait. He knew that hair. "Grnager..." he whispered vehemently to himself. His father taught him to have no pity, and Draco hated himself for it. But this girl was known to hang around with Potter and Weasley. She deserved it right? She was known to hang around with the one person who tried as hard as he could to make Draco's life hell!
He stood and stretched then faced her, trying his best to look somewhat menacing. He left her alone as much as possible since his third year, but if she was alone, well. "Granger! What're you doing out here all alone? Where's Potty and Weasleby?" He called over to her, not caring, for a moment, if he hurt her or not.

Hermione had been crying for a while, trying hard to forget about everything that had something to do with the wat between Order of the phoenix and death eaters. She knew that her attempt had totally failed, when she heard Draco Malfoys voice calling her. She was not in the mood to quarrel with him or anyone else. At first she thought that it was better not to answer anything but then she realized how much she actually wanted to talk with someone. Someone else than Ron, Harry or Ginny.
Hermione raised her head and gazed at Malfoy. She didn't have any expression on her face and she had no idea what to say. She didn't want to get any more problems but somehow she was unale to be polite. Tears kept falling on her lap when she finally opened her mouth and talked to her so-called enemy : "Why do you ask? So you can tell your father that 'the mudblood' is here? So you can tell him that he can come and kill me?"
After yelling this Hermione felt horrible and guilty. She was not supposed to act as rudely as slytherins did but she could not help it. She was tired, scared and even hungry. She had not eaten almost anything during the last few days. Eating felt so meaningless those days.
Hermione wiped her eyes a bit, knowing that her face did not look too pretty at the moment. She was also well aware of the fact that Draco Malfoy was still somewhere near and she was scared. If he attacked her, she would have to fight back But she did not want to hurt Draco even though she did hate him.. sometimes. Hermione had never hated Draco as much as she was supposed to because she was sorry for him. She knew that his father was an evil man who was able to force him to do all kinds of terrible things. That's why Hermione was shaking when she leaned on the tree and looked at the Black Lake. She tried to see where 'the slytherin's prince' was but didn't manage to spot him. Where was he?

Draco watched the Gryffindor seventh year from afar, knowing that, should he try to come closer, she would surely try to curse him. She had everything against him. He was tied, willingly or not, to those who had thrown her life out of balance. There were times when he felt bad for her. Smart as she was, she was living in a world of men, and she must have felt lonely sometimes. Draco could certainly understand that feeling. He frowned when she looked up. Much as he tried to hate her, Draco had always thought she was...at least a little pretty. Now, though, her face was red and tears poured down. She gazed at him, expressionless.
"Why do you ask? So you can tell your father that 'the mudblood' is here? So you can tell him that he can come and kill me?" Draco's lips tightened. In his earlier years, when he was so much more naive, his responce would have come quickly, something starting with my father. Now, his thoughts and feelings were mixed, and he thought out everything he said. He could not, in good mind, stick up for his father. But then, if his father found out he didn't, there would be punishment.
Hermione walked back behind a tree, still shaking visibly. Draco lifted his head and stuffed his wand in his pocket. He didn't need to be cursed at again... He took a few steps forward, and stopped just twenty from the tree. "No.... I was...just asking. And I wouldn't tell him to kill you. He'd do it in a heart beat." The words came out cold and cruel at first, but the last part was merely muttered, a half hearted attempt at becoming his old self.

Hermione was extremely scared for a while before she heard Draco's voice. For a short moment she really had thought that Draco had gone to tell his father about hermione's location. "No.... I was...just asking. And I wouldn't tell him to kill you. He'd do it in a heart beat" Hermione heard Draco saying. His words sounded cold and cruel at first, but when Hermione thought of what he had just said, she realized that he had actually been sort of nice. This is why Hermione flashed a small smile and tried to look into Draco's eyes with her own gleaming ones.
Soon Hermione turned to look at the lake again but now she didn't feel like crying anymore. Because of some unknown reason she wanted to talk with Draco Malfoy, the boy she had once hated more than words can tell. The situation had changed when Hermione had heard more things about Draco's father and the Dark Lord. She knew that Draco was a death eater only because he didn't really have other choises, but still she hoped that the was a chance that he could change his side. She hoped that Draco would join the order of the phoenix. But would he do that? That's what Hermione was going to find out sooner or later.
Hermione took out a book from her bag, but before she started reading she asked Draco almost kindly : "Why are you here? Just taking a stroll?" She was in the know about the fact that this question might have made Draco surprised. It was the first time Hermione tried to be friendly when she talked to him. Perhaps it was also going to be the last time, who knows. This thing depended on draco's reaction and reply.
